As other reviewers have said, the movie needs a few more facts, revelations and secrets to leave the already relatively well informed viewer even better informed. One is left a little frustrated by unanswered questions and areas that are uninvestigated.

There are things that appear as new information; such as the techniques for confronting and for being confronted, which are fascinating However, this format is different to any other movie about this subject, in that it is about the making of a movie or short film about Scientology leader David Miscavige and the research on the guy and his 'Church'. This allows interviews with quite a few ex-members, and for alleged experiences to be re-enacted as fiction.

The casting is also amusing and Perez who is ultimately cast as Miscavige gives what the public will perceive as a deliciously accurate performance given what we have seen, read and heard about the man.

It is hard not to feel frustrated regarding the treatment and interviewing of Marty Rathbun, who was one of Miscavige's right-hand-men for many years, and also plays a key role in the research, casting and production of the 'movie' inside this documentary.

Part of me felt pity for him, and admiration for continuing to speak out despite Scientology's campaign of destruction against him. Alternately i also wanted Louis do press him harder on his own part in the mistreatment and abuse of Church members and those who had been perceived as a threat to Scientology aka Supressive Persons.

This would have probably been impossible though without losing him as a vital part of the documentary. Ironically, there does seem to be a conspiracy of silence amongst ex-members not to reveal the awful things that another ex-member may have done. Again this puts Louis and us in the frustrating position of wanting to push research and interviewing further, but not wanting to risk alienating sources.

The most wonderfully satisfying part of the documentary is Louis himself, his calm and unfazed response to those confronting him is perfect. Along with his unthreatening 'i'm just curious' challenges, you will feel huge satisfaction as it is them rather than Louis who make the cardinal sins in Scientology of looking frustrated, irrational and not in control of the situation whilst on camera. We are left with the impression that the 'Church' of Scientology does not know what to do about Louis Theroux as he is invulnerable to all their known techniques and really has no loose edges for them to pull at - he is the absolute perfect foil for them.

It's like he puzzles the hell out of them. Helpful Report abuse. This documentary is very well made, but it would be very hard for anyone to really fully understand the content, if you have not seen some of the other documentaries that have been made by others in previous years. I can understand why some of the reviews have given this doc.

However, this is more a reflection of the psychogical state of the former Scientologists, Louis used as consultants. This subject will always be incredibly hard to fully reproduce the horrors, but delves into some of the practices. The people featured in this doc. These people show subtle and not so subtle signs of being affected badly by their experiences in this doc.

There are other docs that go into the footage of people being "squirrel baited" and all the invasive tecniques that are persistenty used and this gives a better understanding of the horrors. This doc goes into some examples, but you will probably not appreciate this doc, without prior knowledge on this subject.

From my understanding of the subject, Louis has done a fantastic job of using similar passive aggressive psychology tecniques in reverse, on his aggressors that were assigned to "psych him out" and sabotage his doc. They failed to carry out what they intended. Furthermore, the actors used for demonstrating and imitating certain main players in Scientology would have caused shockwaves of anger and outrage to the seniors of this organisation.

It was a very innotative way to try to investigate and understand what occurs i nthis far reaching sinister cult. Would have got five stars, but I believe this needed a 30 to 45 mins background, showing some of the past footage that was broadcast by another BBC or Channel 4 undercover documentary about five years ago. This would have set a foundation for viewers that have very little knowledge of the subject and may have provided a lot more reasoning, why Louis has escalated the negative publicity of Scientoloogy to the next level.

Good documentary, I wish I had seen it before getting involved with the bloody cult when I was much younger. I believe David Miscavige is responsible for turning a practical self help method, which could actually have been beneficial to humanity, into the monster called Scientology. I think he betrayed the intentions of Hubbard and I wonder if he had anything to do with his demise. I think there are people above Miscavige, this documentary doesn't go up to the top.

Some techniques developed by Ron Hubbard were actually great, i. They should spend the rest of their lives behind bars! Day Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November A great attempt at gaining access to the world of Scientology. Like many, I am a fan of Theroux. Hearing that he'd attempt such a feat was intriguing, but at the same time I knew from my own research on the subject - it would turn out to be a let down in comparison to his earlier work.

This is not a failing on him. Theroux became well known way before this documentary came to light. He would find it difficult to get into any highly secretive establishment. As with many religions, the power and wealth they produce can do a lot of good, whilst hiding complicated and clever inner workings and methods.

Hearing from outside sources, going with the faith they're speaking truth is all you can do. Unfortunately, the world we live in allow lawyers, judges and high profile individuals to be religious - yet 'swear' they're not bias in their own profession. I think Louis has demonstrated here exactly that, the influence any religion has will easily create barriers for any honest review.

It's a good watch. If you have heard of Scientology then you know it's a profoundly difficult documentary topic. It's the best anyone could do with the access any forward, honest reporter could gain. A chilling insight into Scientology, from its origins and up to date. The films greatest fault is that there is no voice of the Church so called ;by refusing to comment Scientology seeks to discredit the film and without that voice there is a degree of bias.

There is also no comment from state bodies, in particular the IRS, which may have added an interesting note to the investigation. However, the filmmakers have been careful to counteract that where they can and to attempt to understand why an organisation that leavers have so many horror stories about, could attract and maintain followers.

A principle question, and one that is not answered in this film, although it is raised, is how it can be considered a religion and if that consideration can be challenged. Regardless of how you feel about Scientology this film raises a number of concerns that it seems astounding are not being investigated or addressed by authorities in the USA and elsewhere. It is a thought provoking documentary of a powerful organisation that seems to be running itself unchecked, and whether you believe it is a religion or not, to be so unchecked is - as history has shown us with other religious and non religious organisations - unhealthy.

You remember. Anyway, what also made it memorable was that the entire time that Sweeney was filming Scientologists, they were filming him. And, seeing an opportunity to get Sweeney in some hot water, the church put out its own counter-documentary about Sweeney losing his cool, and generally trashed the BBC for what it perceived as bias.

The result was a minute video that, eight years later, plays like a trip down memory lane. In , Sweeney struck again, making a second film about Scientology that featured some of the former church officials who had defected and gone public in the meantime — specifically, former church spokesman Mike Rinder.

Scientology responded with heavy surveillance of Rathbun and his wife Monique from private investigators. Then, in , things took a truly strange turn when the Rathbuns found their house under siege by a Scientology intimidation squad that called themselves the Squirrel Busters. But on the other hand, the crew did ultimately release a short film about Rathbun, and we thought the animation was really keen….

And Gibney, of course, also got the counter-documentary treatment. Scientology has paid a huge amount of money to get its short films about Gibney to the right viewers. What will a Scientology film criticizing Theroux be like? We have a feeling it will be a lot like these previous efforts. What did you find dull or clever in these short films? And do you think Louis Theroux has anything to worry about? The book will not be available for pre-order before that date.

It is an excellent documentary, interviewing people that have been down through the void and scheme of scientology, so it carries a lot of weight. I found it really amusing and thorough, especially the way things about the religion are explained.

It provides 2 hours of great amusement, 2 hours that will consume you totally. We are all interested in learning more about the "mistery" that surrounds this cult movement, and how it has obtained so many followers, and even more the colossal fortune.
